Student Opportunities
A volunteer internship program with the National Weather Service is available in cooperation with the NWS Central Region Office. In this program, students receive up to six hours of college credit for volunteer work in a National Weather Service Office. Through this program, volunteers become familiar with the local radar system, AWIPS, weather balloon launching procedures and prepared programs for transmission on the NOAA weather radio. In this training capacity, the volunteer assists the forecaster or other weather service specialist in monitoring and analyzing weather conditions.
A similar program at Offutt Air Force Base is available for students enrolled in ROTC. These students are provided the chance to work with an officer at the base weather station. Many exciting opportunities present themselves in this capacity, including the chance to brief and talk to pilots.
The program has now extended to include internships with industry and the media. This program is getting excellent support in the local area. In broadcasting internships, students have the ability to work one-on-one with broadcast meteorologists in the local area and obtain great experience in forecasting and forecast presentation. Many of these internships provide the student with a chance to work in front of a camera, while presenting a forecast on a blue or green chroma screen!
