Online Resources in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences:

Hixson-Lied Science Building


The Department of Atmospheric Sciences is housed on the fifth floor of the new Hixson-Lied Science Building. As part of the current phase of expansion of Creighton University, this building provides state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities for the Atmospheric Sciences, including:

  • Two "smart classrooms", featuring integrated LCD projectors, stereo audio, DVD and VHS video, cable television and ELMO systems.

  • The Wiegand Science Laboratory, featuring 15 PCs for classroom use, integrated video and audio, and cable television.

  • The Wiegand Environmental Science Classroom, featuring 12 PCs for classroom use, and integrated audio and video. (Operated jointly with the Program in Environmental Sciences.
  • A computer lab with 8 Windows computers and 4 Sun computers for use by students.

Data and Software


The Department of Atmospheric Sciences has licenses to use several leading weather visualization packages for teaching and research purposes. These software packages can be run on either our Linux- or Windows-based computing resources.

Operational weather observations, satellite imagery, NIDS radar data, and model runs are received continuously via UCAR's LDM ("Local Data Manager") feed.

Traditional, paper weather charts are also received continuously.

Reinert Alumni Library


The Reinert Alumni Library is the main branch of the Creighton University library system. The library has extensive holdings in the Atmospheric Sciences, as well as all major meteorological research journals. (Search the libary's holdings.) Additionally, the library provides electronic access to many research journals from both on and off campus. Available journals include:
